It’s time for a weekly check-in!
Look at me, actually posting my check-in after only a week! I mean, I still didn’t get it posted on a weekday like I meant to, but we’re getting somewhere lol. It’s been a bit of a rough week. My great-grandparents have been very sick and my great-grandpa passed away Wednesday night, so we traveled several hours each way to visit my great-grandma and some other extended family on Thursday. I took yesterday as a self-care day and took the day off work to spend it with my spouse. We went to a used bookstore near us and I found a ton of discounted horror DVDs for $1-2 and lucked up on a really nice condition copy of the Fairyloot edition of A Dowry of Blood, so it was a nice way to bring some happiness into the end of the week!
I didn’t do too much reading over the past week, unfortunately. Two of these were super short reads, like 100pg or less. I’m hoping to finish another book later tonight, but I’m not going to update this again before it uploads, so it’ll have to go in next week’s post. I’m aiming to finish one book per day all month, but it’s pretty late and I’m getting tired, so tonight’s finished book might just have to be one of the super quick novellas I have on my kindle.
- The Caretaker // Cass Clarke → ⭐⭐⭐⭐
- The Unicorn Killer // Candace Nola → ⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Throne of the Fallen // Kerri Maniscalco → ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫
📚 current reads 📚
I feel like I’m making such slow progress on these! Maybe I should’ve set my current reading limit to 4 instead of 6 just so I wouldn’t be able to sit on the same 5 books for weeks on end. 😂 The worst part is that I’m enjoying all of them a LOT except for Christmas and Other Horrors, which has been hit-and-miss for sure. I’m writing this post on Friday night and I’m actually about to start House of Flame and Shadow with Misty, but I’m going to start that while laying in bed and I don’t feel like coming back and updating this later. 😂
- Christmas and Other Horrors // Ellen Datlow → 38%
- The Shadow of What Was Lost // James Islington → 42%
- Dead Letters: Episodes of Epistolary Horror // Jacob Steven Mohr → 29%
- Slaying the Vampire Conqueror // Carissa Broadbent → 36%
- Bewitched // Laura Thalassa → 74%
We watched Inside (2007) last night, which I had seen years ago but didn’t remember AT ALL, and it was fantastic. I think French horror films are honestly just on this totally different playing field and I’m never disappointed. If you want something really gruesome and high-stakes to watch, it’s on Tubi (a legal, free, ad-supported movie site) and I highly recommend it!
What are you reading right now, or what did you recently finish? Is anything exciting happening in your life? Let me know in the comments!

February 6, 2024Inside is so good! I like to think that most horror movies don’t scare me anymore, but those French movies from the 2000s always find a way to get under my skin.

February 6, 2024I’m glad you agree! They always hit on a totally different level.
